Why Basmati Rice?
Basmati is the long-grain, aromatic rice at the heart of South Asian cooking. When cooked right, each grain is fluffy, separate, and fragrant. Whether you're making plain steamed rice, a Nepali dal bhat, or a biryani, the technique matters. Here's everything you need to know.
Choosing the Right Basmati
Not all basmati is equal. At Nepsto we stock several premium varieties:
- Guard Ultimate Basmati Rice – aged, extra-long grain, ideal for biryani and special occasions
- Double Zebra Basmati Rice – consistent quality, great everyday rice for dal bhat
- Heer Basmati Rice – available in 5kg and 20kg, a household favourite for fluffy everyday cooking
- Diyo Basmati Rice 1121 XL – the premium 1121 extra-long grain variety, prized for its exceptional aroma and length; available in 5kg and 20kg
The Perfect Water Ratio
The golden rule for stovetop basmati: 1 cup rice : 1.5 cups water. For older, aged varieties like Guard Ultimate or Diyo 1121 XL, you may need slightly more water (1:1.75) as the longer grains absorb more.
Step-by-Step: Stovetop Method
- Rinse – Wash the rice 2–3 times until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch and prevents clumping.
- Soak – Soak for 20–30 minutes. This shortens cooking time and helps grains elongate.
- Boil – Add rice and cold water to a pot. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat.
- Simmer – Once boiling, reduce heat to the lowest setting, cover tightly, and cook for 10–12 minutes.
- Rest – Remove from heat and let it rest, covered, for 5 minutes. Do not lift the lid during cooking.
- Fluff – Use a fork to gently fluff the rice before serving.
Rice Cooker Method
Use the same 1:1.5 ratio. Rinse and soak as above, then cook on the standard white rice setting. Most rice cookers will switch to 'warm' automatically when done.
Nepali Dal Bhat – The Classic Pairing
Dal bhat (lentil soup with rice) is Nepal's national dish, eaten twice a day in most households. Serve your basmati with a simple yellow dal, tarkari (vegetable curry), and achar for a complete meal. The fluffy, separate grains of Heer or Double Zebra are perfect for soaking up dal, while Diyo 1121 XL elevates the meal with its exceptional fragrance.
Tips for Fluffy Rice Every Time
- Always rinse — skipping this step leads to sticky, starchy rice.
- Never lift the lid while cooking — steam is what cooks the rice evenly.
- Use a heavy-bottomed pot to prevent scorching on the bottom.
- Aged and extra-long grain varieties like Diyo 1121 XL and Guard Ultimate absorb more water and have a more intense aroma.
